Frequently asked questions

What does Familiar do?

Familiar notifies you whenever someone new emails your parent. You choose the amount of detail you need to evaluate the risk.

Who is Familiar for?

It's for adults with elderly parents who actively use email, making them prime targets for scammers.

Why should I care?

AI is making scams smarter and more widespread, increasing the potential for emotional and financial harm to your parents, your family, and you.

What is a 'scam' email?

It's a deceptive message designed to make the recipient (your parent) act against their own interests, without realizing. Some scammers pose as individuals, others as corporations or government institutions.

What is a 'phishing' email?

It's a scam email designed to trick the recipient into sharing private information (passwords, account details etc). The email usually contains a link to a fake webpage pretending to be a bank or other online service.

Are people seeing value in Familiar?

I built this service for myself. I swear by it, and have opened it up to close friends who also love it. You might find it useful, too.

Don't Google or Apple block scams?

Scams are plausible messages from genuine accounts with regular addresses. Passwords, 2FA and spam filters don't stop them.
